Armed gunmen stormed Government Secondary School, Odo-Ekina, in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State on Tuesday evening, kidnapping four students, the school principal and a National Examinations Council official. The assault happened around 5:25 p.m. while students were sitting their NECO examinations, the Kogi State Police Command said.

Police and other security personnel immediately launched a rescue operation to trace the abducted victims. One of the four students has already been freed, according to state police spokesperson ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat.

"Efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining victims and apprehend the attackers," she told reporters. The state Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, travelled to the scene alongside the Brigade Commander and the State Security Adviser to the Governor, Commodore Jerry Omodara (Rtd), for an on-the-spot assessment.

The police said they would release a fuller statement once they verified additional details about the incident. Investigations into the attack are continuing.
