Governor Makinde Pleads for Patience Amidst Nationwide NLC Protests Against Hardship

In the midst of a two-day nationwide protest organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) against the hardship faced by the Nigerian people, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has made a plea for patience and understanding.

Addressing a gathering of NLC leaders and other protesters at the Total Garden Roundabout in Ibadan, the governor acknowledged the current challenges and assured the public that the government is actively working towards alleviating the situation.

The protests, which began on February 27, 2024, have been a response to the economic crisis in Nigeria, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the resulting inflation.

Demonstrations have taken place in various cities across the country, with participants demanding immediate government intervention to improve the living conditions of the Nigerian people.

During his speech, Governor Makinde highlighted the efforts of his administration to address the concerns of the public.

He mentioned the implementation of a N25,000 wage award for state civil servants and a N15,000 wage award for pensioners, which has been in effect since October.

He also pledged to continue implementing programs to cushion the impact of the fuel subsidy removal.

In Ogun State, the NLC chapter also joined the nationwide protests, with participants carrying placards bearing slogans such as “Let the poor breathe,” “End hunger and poverty,” “Reject IMF/World Bank policies,” and “Fix refineries now.

” Speaking to reporters, the state’s NLC Chairman, Hammed Ademola-Benco, emphasized that the protests are aimed at securing good deals for the Nigerian people and not confronting the government.

The protests have garnered significant attention, with various human rights organizations, such as the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), also voicing their support for the cause.

Security agencies, including the police, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), have been present at the demonstrations to maintain law and order.

As the protests continue, the Nigerian people eagerly await further actions from the government in response to their demands.

In the meantime, Governor Makinde’s plea for patience and understanding serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and cooperation in overcoming the challenges faced by the nation.
