Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has removed Eze Chidi Awuse as the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers. The decision was announced during a meeting with members of the council at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Friday.
Awuse, who is an ally of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, was accused of inactivity and failing to provide effective leadership to the council.
He was also criticized for producing a calendar for the year 2024 that did not include the photographs of the Governor and the Deputy Governor.
The governor expressed his belief that Wodo will do a better job and accommodate everyone in the council.
The removal of Awuse comes amid deepening political tension in Rivers State between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. The power struggle between the two has been a source of concern for many in the state.
In his announcement, Governor Fubara emphasized the importance of the council living up to its responsibilities and providing effective leadership.
He stated that the council had been moribund under Awuse's leadership and that the chairman had not been responsible in his duties.
The governor also criticized Awuse for the calendar incident, calling it a special insult to the government. He announced that Awuse's tenure as chairman had been terminated and that Wodo would take over the position immediately.
The decision to remove Awuse and appoint Wodo as the new chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers is expected to have significant implications for the political landscape in the state.
