Federal University Oye-Ekiti has suspended three officials over illegal money collection from students. The university's registrar, Mufutau Ibrahim, announced the action on Wednesday.
Those affected are Olanrewaju Ogunjobi, Director of the Directorate for Educational Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Also suspended are Banji Rildwan Olaleye, Deputy Dean of Student Affairs and Support Services, and James Iyanuoluwa Adio, President of the Students' Union Government.
According to Ibrahim, Ogunjobi and Olaleye allegedly collected N1,000 from each first-year student. They claimed the money was for practical classes run by the directorate.
Management set up an investigative committee to examine the allegations fairly. All accused persons were invited to defend themselves during the probe.
Findings showed that Ogunjobi authorized and collected the funds without senate approval. University rules require all payments go through the bursary with management clearance.
Olaleye, in his position at student affairs, allegedly aided the unauthorized collection. He helped Ogunjobi carry out the scheme, according to the committee's report.
Adio's involvement was indirect but significant, Ibrahim noted. As SUG president, he participated in the initial money distribution.
Later, Adio requested the funds be returned to him. Records showed N700,000 was transferred into his personal bank account.
The registrar said such conduct undermines FUOYE's anti-corruption drive. The university is committed to its ongoing rebranding efforts.
"We will not tolerate student extortion under any circumstance," Ibrahim told reporters. He added that abuse of office and financial misconduct have no place at FUOYE.
Management maintains a zero-tolerance stance on corruption. University authorities vowed to protect the institution's integrity and reputation.
No details were provided about the duration of the suspensions. The university didn't announce whether further disciplinary action would follow.
