Former Guardian Editor, Abraham Ogbodo, joins UPU race, submits form for 2nd Deputy PG

The former Editor of The Guardian newspaper, Mr Abraham Ogbodo, has formally submitted his expression of interest form to contest for the position of Second Deputy President-General of the Urhobo apex body, the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) Worldwide.
Mr Ogbodo, who was accompanied by a group of prominent reformists advocating for the reorganisation and repositioning of the UPU, submitted his form today at the UPU Secretariat, located on Okere Road in Warri South local government area, Delta State.
Widely respected as a pan-Urhobo nationalist, Mr Ogbodo is a former editor and seasoned journalist whose career at The Guardian distinguished him as a voice of integrity and intellect. Since his retirement from active journalism, he has remained deeply connected to his roots in Agbarha-Otor and Ughelli, playing a prominent role in various cultural and community initiatives, including the celebrated “UPU at 90 Anniversary.

At critical moments in Urhobo history, when courage and conviction were most needed—particularly during the crisis following the military’s sacking of Okwagbe and Urhobo communities—Mr. Ogbodo stood tall. He spoke truth to power, confronting military excesses with uncommon bravery. In recognition of his leadership and service, the Delta State Government appointed him Chairman of the Okuama IDP Management Committee, where he successfully managed the affairs of the displaced persons for over six months, funding most of the committee’s activities through personal goodwill and contacts.
Today, the Urhobo nation stands at a crossroads. The UPU, once a unifying voice and rallying point for Urhobo identity, has grown weak under poor leadership. Many believe the current executive has failed to represent the interests of the Urhobo people effectively, resulting in the Union’s diminishing relevance among the comity of ethnic nationalities in Nigeria.
Our neighbours now look at us with pity, as the once-powerful UPU has become a toothless bulldog—largely because of leaders who view the platform as a personal meal ticket rather than a sacred trust. This cannot continue. The Urhobo people deserve a rebirth, a new vision, and men of integrity to restore dignity, unity, and purpose to the UPU.
It is in this spirit that many Urhobo sons and daughters are throwing their hats into the ring to change the narrative. We, therefore, call on all well-meaning Urhobo people—home and abroad—to rally behind this noble cause. Together, we can reclaim our pride, rebuild our union, and reposition Urhobo for greatness once again.
