Footballer urges Enugu Govt to bring back school sports

By Nicholas Obisike

Chidera Offor, a female footballer in Enugu State, has called on the incoming government to resurrect sports by reviving the abandoned schools sports programme in the state.

Miss Offor made the appeal while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, saying that school sports produced lots of professionals for the state and the country at large.

She said “it has been long we witnessed school sports in the state which I was a participant during the time of Gov. Suvilian Chime.

“I know many people that made it through to the level they are now through this school sports as it helps in discovering, development of young and vibrant talents.

“School sports has a mind of its own where you see many talents waiting to explore and I wish the incoming government will give hope again to those who have lost it in sports,” she advised.

Offor, who play for Greefoot FC Enugu, said that sports generally in the state was nothing to write home about and something she never imagined.

“No good structure of sports facilities, poor facility management, no hope for the upcoming generations because there are no avanue for them to excel.

“I can recall how many times Enugu state has not participated in National Sports Festival, not to talk of more of school sports.

“These are things we expect the director of sports should look into; these alone give hope to the young ones that they can still make it through sports,” she said.

Chidera said that sports in the state needed a whole lot of restructuring and that the incoming government should give the director of sports to someone that knows this game.

‘Someone that knows what sports is all about and not the other way round and resuscitate sports in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions.

“Make sure that primary section gets their own annual school sports same with the secondary and tertiary institution; this will help to bring back sports alive in Enugu state,” Offor said.
