Football: Mogaji lauds Kwara students for proposed tertiary institutions tourney

The Executive Chairman, Kwara State Sports Commission, Malam Bola Mogaji, has lauded the state chapter of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) for their plan to organise a football competition among tertiary institutions in the state to honour Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

Mogaji commended the students body who visited the commission on Friday for choosing Sport as one of the programmes lined up to associate with the governor on his second term in office because Sports is the umbrella that engage the youths from social vices.

He noted that gone are the days when sports were regarded as recreational as it is now big time money spinning business.

The former national squash player said sports are now big ventures that provide people opportunities and fame globally, citing examples of Haruna Quadir and Taiwo Awoniyi who rose from grass to grace due to their prowess in sports.

The executive chairman further explained that in sports, one don’t need certificate to excel once you are talented, adding that education is very vital as it will guide one’s focus and will be there to fall back on.

Mogaji lamented that states are not performing well as they are supposed to because serious attention is no longer being paid to schools sports like it used to be in those days.

He advised them to forward their programme to the commission to identify areas where it could be of assistance.

Earlier, the Chairman of NANS in Kwara, Yusuf Abdulgafar, who led other executives, said they were at the commission to intimate the executive chairman of their plans in the coming days particularly as it concerns the football competition they intend to hold among tertiary institutions in the state in the name of the governor.

The NANS chairman explained that they are taking this extra curriculum to wind away from classroom activities and create harmony among tertiary institutions in the state.

The proposed football competition, tagged AA CUP 2023, is scheduled to hold at a date yet to be announced in May to appreciate AbdulRazaq for his giant strides in the sports sector as he is set for his second term in office.

Abdulgafar also disclosed that a magazine, titled THE ACHIEVER, has been put together in honour of the governor for his tremendous achievements in the education sector.

The students presented some copies of the publication to the commission.
