Former Ajax winger Finidi George has resigned as coach of the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, following the Nigeria Football Federation's (NFF) decision to appoint a foreign coach to oversee him.
This was announced by ex-Super Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye on X.com on Saturday.
George, 53, took over as Super Eagles coach in May after Jose Peseiro's contract ended in February. He had previously served as Peseiro's assistant for 20 months.
However, the team's poor performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin led to George's demotion.
The NFF's decision to appoint a foreign coach to oversee George, despite his recent appointment, has been met with controversy.
George's one-year contract will be downgraded, and his reported monthly salary of 15 million Naira will be reduced to 5 million Naira.
His handpicked assistants will also be replaced by the new foreign coach's staff.
In a meeting with Sports Minister John Enoh, George expressed his frustration with the lack of support from the NFF and questioned the commitment of Nigeria's top players in the crucial World Cup qualifiers.
George's resignation marks the end of his short tenure as Super Eagles coach and raises questions about the NFF's decision-making process and its impact on the team's performance.
