The Fibroid Care Centre of the Nordica Fertility Centre is set to commence High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) treatment for fibroids in Abuja from July 1, according to the centre's chief executive officer, Dr Abayomi Ajayi. The announcement was made during a news briefing and fibroid seminar in Abuja.
HIFU is a treatment that converts ultrasound energy to heat to burn off fibroids, offering a less invasive alternative to traditional surgical methods. Dr Ajayi revealed that the centre has successfully treated 425 patients in Lagos since launching HIFU treatment there in 2021.
The introduction of HIFU treatment in Abuja aims to reduce the risk of complications associated with surgery and other treatment methods.
Maryanne, who underwent HIFU treatment for fibroids, shared her experience, stating that the procedure significantly reduced the pain and heavy flow she experienced during her periods.
Comfort Okpega, another patient who underwent HIFU treatment, highlighted the benefits of the procedure, including the reduction of heavy flow and infertility issues.
She also mentioned that the fear of complications from surgery and the experiences of women who underwent multiple surgeries influenced her decision to choose HIFU treatment.
Dr Bakut John Maiganga explained how the HIFU machine works, stating that it generates sound waves that focus on a specific area at a particular intensity and power, effectively killing the fibroids with thermal energy.
