FG reassures of safe drinking water for Nigerians

The Federal Government has promised Nigerians that it will ensure clean drinking water and effective monitoring to avoid outbreaks of waterborne diseases.

This was disclosed by Mr. Olu Daniel, the Director, Quality and Control in the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, who led a delegation of officials on a sensitization visit to the Kano State Ministry of Water Resources on Thursday in Kano.

Daniel said the purpose of the visit was to partner with the state government to avoid outbreaks of diseases such as cholera caused by polluted drinking water.

He said that the ministry was responsible for providing clean drinking water and health services and therefore needed to plan ahead to ensure prevention and management.

“The federal ministry of water resources and sanitation has activated all mechanisms to stop the cholera outbreak, among other water-related diseases.

‘’ WASH emergency is about coordinating emergency activities that involve the provision of water sanitation and hygiene to prevent premature deaths.

“These activities are in three phases: first, prevention before the disaster happens; second, preparation to ensure there is no outbreak; and third, response to the outbreak.

“We selected Kano State because of their remarkable efforts at ensuring that the disease is reduced to the minimum,’’ he said.

Daniel added: “Kano is currently rated 61 percent in terms of provision of water supply, while in terms of sanitation, the state has about 50 percent compliance,” he said.
