FG Commences Vocational Training for Inmates, Each to Receive N500,000 Grant

The Federal Government has recently launched a vocational training program for inmates in the 241 custodial facilities across the country, aiming to empower them with various artisanal skills and reduce recidivism.

The Senior Special Adviser to the President on Technical, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Education, Abiola Arogundade, announced this initiative during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday.

Each inmate who completes the training will receive a grant of N500,000 to start their own business, ensuring a smooth reintegration into society after serving their sentence.

The program, which began at the Kuje Correctional Centre, will be extended to other facilities, such as Suleja.

The training will cover various skills such as hairdressing, fashion design, and computer skills, with the use of state-of-the-art equipment.

The Bank of Industry is also involved in the project, providing a multi-purpose intervention to ensure inmates can generate income through multiple streams after their release.

Arogundade emphasized the importance of certification, as the skills acquired during the training will be recognized globally.

The program is a crucial step in the government’s goal to empower no fewer than five million Nigerians with various artisanal skills annually.

In addition to the vocational training, inmates will also receive support in setting up their businesses, including POS machines and laptops, to help them establish a sustainable source of income.

This initiative is a significant step towards rehabilitating inmates and reducing the rate of reoffending, ultimately contributing to the overall development of the country.
