Police say a commercial area in Lagos is secure after an explosive device detonated in Mushin on Monday morning.
Commissioner Fatai Tijani assured residents at the Shoe Materials Market that the situation is under control. He spoke to journalists after his team swept the entire area.
Security forces moved quickly after receiving word of the explosion. Explosive Ordnance Disposal operatives cordoned off the scene immediately.
An Improvised Explosive Device had been planted beneath a parked vehicle. It went off when someone started the engine.
The device sat on the passenger side of the car. According to Tijani, investigators found it during their examination.
One person was hurt in the blast and rushed to hospital. The victim is now stable and receiving care.
Tijani confirmed his EOD team found no other devices in the area. They've recovered parts of the exploded device for forensic testing.
The commissioner urged Lagosians not to panic or believe false rumors. He insisted the state remains secure and warned criminals to leave.
Tajudeen Faronbi, the Baale of Oke Mushin Community, witnessed the early morning incident. He was praying around 1 a.m. when residents alerted him to trouble.
"I received a call about something unusual," Faronbi told journalists. "When I arrived, I saw the vehicle and people were terrified."
He immediately contacted the Area Commander and other officials. About 35 police operatives arrived within minutes to secure the location.
Additional backup units were called in to maintain order. Their quick response prevented panic from spreading through the community.
Officers cordoned off the suspicious vehicle and kept residents at a distance. Nobody knew who owned the car or why it was parked there.
Faronbi credited the swift police action with preventing a worse outcome. He said the community remains calm following the incident.
Investigators continue examining the recovered device components. Officials haven't yet identified the vehicle's owner or occupant.
Security remains heightened across the commercial district. Police patrols have been increased in the area.
Residents expressed confidence in the swift response and ongoing investigations. Market traders have since returned to their daily activities.
Tijani reiterated that his command prioritizes public safety statewide. He vowed to pursue those responsible for the bombing.
