England's injury troubles at right-back have deepened ahead of the knockout stages. Defender Jarell Quansah twisted his ankle during Saturday's 2-0 win over Panama.
Coach Thomas Tuchel started Quansah after Reece James suffered a hamstring injury. Quansah lasted just 64 minutes before limping off following a challenge.
The Bayer Leverkusen player is now in doubt for Wednesday's last 32 clash. Tuchel told reporters after the match about Quansah's condition: "Classic ankle twist."
According to the manager, Quansah remains "in pain" from the injury. He noted the former Liverpool defender has dealt with similar issues before.
"It typically takes a matter of days to recover," Tuchel explained. He added that Quansah currently has his leg elevated and iced.
England's right-back options are now severely limited going forward. Djed Spence is available but Tuchel has used him primarily as a left-back backup.
James, the Chelsea captain, was already sidelined before the Panama match. Tino Livramento was also ruled out just before the tournament began.
Three consecutive injury blows have created a headache for Tuchel's defensive plans. England topped Group L with the comfortable victory over Panama.
Quansah's fitness will likely be assessed in the coming days. A decision on his availability for Senegal or DR Congo will depend on his recovery progress.
