Gaizka Mendieta, the former Spain midfielder, believes Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal are the standout contenders for next year's Ballon d'Or. The ex-international told reporters that the 2026 World Cup will prove decisive in determining who lifts the individual honour.
Mendieta reckons Messi will claim a record ninth Ballon d'Or if Argentina defeats Spain in the tournament final. "If Argentina prevails, Messi will undoubtedly win it," he said.
The veteran also backed Yamal as a serious challenger should Spain secure a second World Cup title. "Lamine Yamal could achieve this.
He has had an outstanding season despite facing injuries and has been crucial for Barcelona," Mendieta told Goal.
He stressed that success at international level typically determines the award's outcome. "The World Cup serves as the pivotal factor for the Ballon d'Or.
Just as Harry Kane may have earned it, Yamal could also achieve this," he added.
Mendieta highlighted that Spain possess multiple potential winners beyond Yamal. "He continues to be essential for Spain.
If Spain triumphs, we should consider their roster for potential candidates. Mikel Oyarzabal is another exceptional player that has gained recognition," he noted.
Currently, Messi has netted eight goals and provided four assists in the North American tournament. Yamal, by contrast, has managed just one goal across seven matches so far.
