Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Thursday signed into law seven significant bills, including the transformative Delta State Electricity Power Sector Bill, 2024—hailed as a catalyst for the state’s rapid industrialization and economic expansion.
The other bills signed into law include:
-
Delta State Physical and Regional Planning Bill, 2024
-
Delta State Film and Video Censor's Board Bill, 2024
-
Registration and Regulation of Private Veterinary Clinics (Amendment) Law, 2024
-
Child Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2024
-
Delta State Pet Control and Responsible Ownership Bill, 2024
-
Delta State College of Health Technology, Ovrode Bill, 2024
Commending the House of Assembly for its diligence, Governor Oborevwori noted that the laws align with his administration’s M.O.R.E. Agenda, aimed at delivering sustainable development and improving the lives of Deltans.
“These seven bills are vital to the progress and future of our state,” the governor said. “I’m particularly thrilled to sign the Delta State Electricity Power Sector Law, 2024, which provides a comprehensive legal framework to attract investment across power generation, transmission, and distribution.”
He emphasized that reliable power is foundational for economic growth, stating, “No investment can thrive without power. With our population and this new legal backing, Delta is now primed for significant energy sector investment.”
Oborevwori also highlighted the importance of the Child Rights (Amendment) Law, which introduces stricter protections for children, including a ban on employing minors as domestic help outside their family homes and the creation of an Adoption Service Department within the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community and Social Development.
“These new laws will protect our vulnerable populations, enhance quality of life, boost environmental sustainability, attract investments, and grow our Internally Generated Revenue,” the governor added. “However, passing laws is only the beginning. We must now ensure effective implementation. I urge all stakeholders to play their part.”
Earlier, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, lauded the governor’s infrastructural strides, noting that Deltans are witnessing value for every naira spent. He also emphasized that the legislative process included input from the public through memoranda and hearings to ensure the laws reflect the people’s needs.
