Edo 2024: Five Women Challenge Male Dominance in Gubernatorial Race

In a significant development for Nigerian politics, five women have stepped forward to challenge the decade-long male dominance in Edo State’s gubernatorial race.

These women, hailing from various backgrounds and political affiliations, are determined to break the glass ceiling and bring a fresh perspective to the state’s governance.

The five female candidates are:

Loretta Oduware Ogboro-Okor, a UK-trained consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, who is running under the Labour Party.

Omosede Igbinedion, a former member of the House of Representatives, representing the Ovia Federal Constituency. She is running under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Victoria Amu, an occupational therapist and philanthropist from the United States. She is the only female aspirant within the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Angela Aburime-Asom, a medical doctor from Edo Central Senatorial District. She is running under the Labour Party.

Asha Emily Okojie, a dedicated humanitarian and philanthropist with a strong background in health information management and administration. She is also running under the Labour Party.

These women bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the table, with backgrounds in healthcare, politics, and philanthropy.

Their diverse perspectives and determination to challenge the status quo have the potential to change the political landscape of Edo State.

The upcoming gubernatorial election in September 2024 will be a crucial test for these women, as they face off against their male counterparts.

The outcome of the election will not only determine the future of Edo State but also serve as a bellwether for the broader role of women in Nigerian politics.

As the race heats up, it remains to be seen if one of these women will emerge as the next governor of Edo State.

Regardless of the outcome, their candidacies represent a significant step forward for women in Nigerian politics and a challenge to the long-standing male dominance in the gubernatorial arena.
