Don urges Nigerians to make deliberate efforts in restoring damaged environment

A renowned environmental expert, Prof. Christian Madu, has urged Nigerians to make deliberate efforts in restoring the damaged environment found in every community in order to build a sustainable friendly eco-system.

“This move will serve as a vital benefit to all living things and natural endowments around us,” said Madu, a Professor of Environmental Management and Control at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

The don spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Enugu on the sidelines of the commemoration of the World Environment Day.

The 2023 theme for World Environment Day, celebrated yearly every June 5, is “Ecosystem Restoration”.

According to Madu, “we have done a lot of damage to the environment that sustains us either deliberately or ignorantly.

“It is about time we start restoring our environment – by repairing, renewing and giving fair treatment to the environment.

“This is for us to check and remediate the damages and degradation done over the years,” he said.

Madu, who is a supervisor of lead researchers at the Centre for Environmental Management and Control, UNN, said that there was a need to review and control human activities for a sustainable environment.

“This will be done by taking a systemic view of the activities of humans in our environment that has finite resources,” he said.

It would be recalled that Research.com, a worldwide scientific research group, recently ranked Prof. Madu as number one research scholar in Nigeria and ranked him number 1,157 in the World going with its Discipline H-index of 37.

The World Environment Days is a day that commemorates the environment that sustains us all and calls attention to the ongoing negative effects of climate change and global warming.
