The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has firmly debunked a viral online report linking the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary parade to an alleged coup attempt, describing the publication as “false, malicious, and intended to cause unnecessary tension.”
In a strongly worded statement signed by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, and released on Saturday, the DHQ said it “never mentioned any coup attempt” and accused the unnamed online platform of deliberately spreading misinformation to undermine public confidence in the military.
“The attention of the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has been drawn to a false and misleading report by an online publication insinuating that the cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary was linked to an alleged attempted military coup,” the statement read. “The report also made spurious references to the recent DHQ press release announcing the arrest of sixteen officers currently under investigation for professional misconduct.”
The military clarified that the decision to suspend the independence celebrations was purely administrative and in line with national priorities.
“The decision regarding the cancellation of the 65th Independence Anniversary parade was to allow Mr President attend a strategic bilateral meeting outside the country and for members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) to sustain the momentum on the fight against terrorism, insurgency and banditry,” the statement explained.
Addressing concerns over the arrest of sixteen officers, the DHQ said the ongoing investigation was “a routine internal process aimed at ensuring discipline and professionalism within the ranks.”
“An investigative panel has been duly constituted, and its findings would be made public,” Brig. Gen. Gusau assured.
Reiterating the military’s loyalty to the constitution and the democratic government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the statement stressed that the Armed Forces remain unwavering in their commitment to Nigeria’s stability.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain firmly loyal to the Constitution and the Federal Government under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. Democracy is forever,” it declared.
The DHQ also urged Nigerians to disregard “the falsehood being circulated by purveyors of misinformation and enemies of our nation,” while calling on citizens to continue supporting security agencies working to protect lives and maintain peace.
“The Federal Government, the legislature, and the judiciary are working closely for the safety, development and well-being of the nation,” the statement concluded.
