The member representing the Urhobo nationality on the board of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Sylvester Ovbije, has flagged off the distribution of chairs and desks to schools in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State as part of efforts to improve learning conditions in oil-producing communities.

The distribution exercise, which began on Thursday, March 12, 2026, forms part of DESOPADEC’s annual intervention programme aimed at addressing the shortage of classroom furniture and creating a more conducive learning environment for pupils and students across the commission’s mandate areas.

Ovbije, who was represented by his Personal Assistant, Francis Voke, said the initiative reflects the commission’s commitment to supporting education and alleviating challenges faced by schools in host communities.

He added that DESOPADEC remains determined to expand its educational support programmes, noting that the commission is also aligning its activities with the development vision of the Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, under the MORE Agenda.

The benefiting schools expressed appreciation to the commission and its leadership for the timely intervention, describing the gesture as a major relief to institutions grappling with inadequate classroom furniture.

The Head Teacher of Anuagba Primary School, Eku, Emuobonuvie Edafiono, commended DESOPADEC and the state government for the support, noting that the donation would significantly improve the learning environment in the school.

“We thank DESOPADEC and our able Governor for this laudable intervention. May God guide him and DESOPADEC,” she said.

Similarly, the Headmaster of Eku Baptist Hospital Staff Primary School, Idegho Waniko Alex, praised the commission for providing twenty-five double chairs and desks to the school, explaining that the institution had previously faced a severe shortage of classroom furniture.

Another beneficiary, Abraka Grammar School in Abraka, also expressed gratitude through community leader Augustine Eruotor, who commended Governor Oborevwori and Ovbije for ensuring that the school benefited from the distribution exercise across the mandate area.

In total, 100 chairs and desks were distributed to four schools. Oro’akpa Primary School received 20, Abraka Grammar School got 30, while Anuagba Primary School and Eku Baptist Hospital Staff Primary School received 25 each.

Stakeholders noted that the intervention would go a long way in improving classroom comfort, enhancing teaching and learning, and strengthening educational development in the benefiting communities.
