Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has said that June 12, Nigeria’s ‘Democracy Day’ has become a special opportunity for all citizens and elected officials to recall the great patriotic contributions of our heroes past and also an opportunity to renew our vows of commitment to democratic ideals.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege emphasized that the Buhari administration’s commitment to democratic ideals motivated the declaration of June 12 as ‘Democracy Day’, adding that it is a date of renewal for Nigerian patriots with unflinching resolve for the furtherance of democracy.

“Dear Compatriots, this special day – June 12 – poignantly reminds us, once again, of the need to further strive for high ideals so that the labours of our past heroes shall not be in vain.

“Just a few days ago, our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) concluded its preparations for the 2023 general elections with its presidential primaries that were acclaimed by all and sundry to be an eloquent testimony to our passion for democratic growth.

“Knowing the deep personal sacrifices made by our known and unsung heroes, June 12 is a date for a silent renewal of our vows to remain on the path of democratic ideals and consistently work towards bequeathing great legacies to coming generations.

“For me personally, being given the opportunity to represent the great people of Delta Central Senatorial District at the Senate and being honoured with the highly-regarded position of Deputy President of the Senate has translated into hard but joyful work, with duties that include legislating for democratic development through processes that gave birth to our new Electoral Act and other populist laws.

“As a people-focused democrat, I have found great joy in the implementation of numerous constituency projects and other developmental initiatives – not only for my constituency but for the greater interests of Delta State, the South-South geopolitical zone and Nigeria as a whole.

“Knowing the passionate yearnings of my people, I have resolved to pursue a populist cause for a gubernatorial leadership that would positively change the face of Delta state”, he stated.

According to the Deputy Senate President, the great historical mission of today’s democrats remains an unfinished business and much more still needs to be done through uncompromising focus and unity of purpose.

“I will be the first to admit that, in spite of our efforts and achievements which are there for all to see, there is still much more to be done; even though we are doing our best in the face of scarce resources and galloping population growth rate that consistently outstrips our capacity to provide jobs for all. It is important to note that the symbolic unity of the broom implies that nothing can break us apart.

“I remain deeply optimistic about the Nigeria project and, with unity of purpose and consistent commitment to democratic ideals, we can all work to move Nigeria forward,” he added.
