Lagos State Clarifies Governor Sanwo-Olu’s Statements on Minimum Wage

The Lagos State Government has issued a clarification regarding statements made by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, which were misconstrued by some media reports to suggest that the minimum wage in the state had been increased to ₦70,000.
In a statement released on April 26, 2024, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, clarified that Governor Sanwo-Olu was inaccurately quoted in some media reports, which arose from the unveiling of Eko Cares, a program aimed at supporting the poor during the current economic hardship.
According to the statement, Governor Sanwo-Olu never announced a new minimum wage of ₦70,000.
Instead, he mentioned that since January, civil servants in the state had been receiving a wage increase of N35,000, which effectively doubled their previous earnings.
This increase was in response to the Federal Government’s directive to increase the minimum wage.
”The governor was erroneously quoted as saying that a new minimum wage of N70,000 had been announced.
This is wrong. Mr. Governor never said so. He said since January, civil servants had been earning the N35,000 wage award directed by the Federal Government.
In other words, those earning N35,000 now earn N70,000.
He did not announce a new minimum wage of N70,000,” Omotoso clarified.
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s statements were made in the context of highlighting the Lagos State Government’s efforts to support its citizens during a challenging economic period.
The clarification emphasizes that the government has not officially increased the minimum wage to ₦70,000 but has instead implemented a wage increase in line with the Federal Government’s directive.
As the public and media outlets await further updates on the minimum wage situation in Lagos State, the clarification serves to set the record straight and ensure that accurate information is disseminated.
