Delta cuts dialysis cost, revamps healthcare facilities

Delta State Government has slashed the cost of dialysis treatment in state-owned hospitals from over ₦70,000 to ₦45,000, easing the burden on patients battling kidney diseases.

Health Commissioner, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, announced the development on Delta Television, disclosing that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has approved the purchase of eight new dialysers to support the programme.

He said the state has also invested in MRI and CT scan machines to reduce the stress of residents travelling long distances for vital medical tests, while warning health workers against sharp practices, stressing that offenders would face stiff sanctions.

Onojaeme further revealed that over 150 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the three senatorial districts are being renovated, even as the state’s free maternal healthcare scheme has cut maternal mortality from 350 to 120 per 100,000 live births.

To improve service delivery, government hospitals have been authorised to utilise 100 percent of their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), while surveillance under the Drug Revolving Fund is being tightened to block fake and adulterated drugs.

The commissioner commended Oborevwori for being the first governor recognised by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) for paying the Medical Residency Fund, describing it as another milestone in the administration’s health sector reforms.

He urged residents to embrace regular medical check-ups, assuring that the government remains committed to making healthcare more accessible and affordable.
