Delta CP Warns Officers: No extortion, no phone searches

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, has read the riot act to officers, warning against extortion, unlawful detention, and the controversial practice of searching citizens’ mobile phones.

Speaking at a strategic conference with Area Commanders, DPOs, and tactical commanders at the Police Officers’ Mess, Asaba, on Tuesday, CP Abaniwonda aligned the session with the Inspector-General of Police’s directives, emphasising professionalism, intelligence-led patrols, and respect for human rights.

“Extortion of any form will not be tolerated by the Command under my leadership. Policemen are not allowed to randomly stop people and search their mobile phones, and any officer found engaging in this embarrassing act will be decisively dealt with,” the CP declared.

He directed senior officers to strengthen pre-deployment briefings, ensure disciplined highway enforcement, and deepen intelligence on kidnap and robbery corridors while maintaining synergy with sister agencies and local communities.

Assuring residents of robust security during the ember months and festive season, CP Abaniwonda urged citizens to remain vigilant and share credible information through the nearest police station or the Command’s distress line, 08036684974.
