Delta Council set to enforce anti-open grazing law

By Advocate | December 5, 2024 | 2 min read |

The Chairman of Isoko North Local Government Council in Delta State, Godwin Ogorugba, has announced that his administration will begin the enforcement of the state's anti-open grazing law on December 22, 2024.

He called on security agencies, vigilante groups, traditional rulers, community presidents-general, and other stakeholders to strictly adhere to the provisions of the law.

The Anti-Open Grazing Law, which was signed into effect by the Delta State Government in 2021, prohibits the open grazing of livestock across the state.

Speaking during a Security and Peace Committee meeting on Tuesday at the council's EXCO chamber in Ozoro, Ogorugba emphasized the urgent need to address the persistent herders-farmers crisis, which has led to significant losses of lives, property, and farming activities over the years.

He urged herders and livestock owners to begin acquiring or leasing land for ranching ahead of the December enforcement date.

Ogorugba reiterated that all livestock, including cattle, goats, and sheep, must be ranched, noting that open grazing has consistently caused conflicts. "You cannot use your business to destroy someone else’s livelihood," he warned.

The chairman described the enforcement of the law as a significant step toward resolving the long-standing conflicts between herders and farmers in Isoko North and the state at large.

"By prohibiting open grazing, we aim to reduce clashes and promote peaceful coexistence between the Isoko North people and Fulani herders," Ogorugba stressed.

He also disclosed that the law provides for the establishment of a task force to oversee its implementation.

Ogorugba urged all stakeholders to cooperate fully, adding, "Full implementation will commence on December 22, 2024, and I implore security agencies, vigilante groups, traditional rulers, community leaders, and other stakeholders to comply strictly with the provisions of the law."
