Delta Assembly calls for action against illegal roadblocks and extortion

The Delta State House of Assembly has condemned the rampant illegal roadblocks and extortion of commuters and traders on roads in the state, calling for urgent intervention from the state governor and security agencies.

The lawmakers, in a motion raised by Hon. Oboro Preyor, representing Bomadi State constituency, expressed their displeasure at the unlawful activities of some individuals who erect illegal roadblocks and collect money from road users under various pretexts.

The motion, which was amended by Hon. Ferguson Onwo, representing Isoko South two constituency, urged the state governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, to direct the state commissioner of police, the director of the Department of State Service (DSS), the joint task force (JTF), and other relevant security agencies in the state to completely and permanently dismantle, remove, and close down all existing illegal road blocks and illegal tax collection points in the state.

The motion also resolved that the individuals responsible for these illegal roadblocks and money collection points should be apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the applicable laws of the state.

Furthermore, the motion called on the governor to establish a special task force to ensure that traders and commuters can freely use the roads without any harassment or intimidation.

The motion received unanimous approval from the assembly members, who highlighted the negative impact of these illegal roadblocks on the economy and security of the state.

They noted that these illegal roadblocks not only violate the law but also increase the cost of goods and services, discourage investment, create traffic congestion, endanger lives and property, and undermine the rule of law in the state.

They warned that if prompt action is not taken to address this issue, it could potentially lead to a breakdown of law and order in the state.

The Speaker of the House, Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, commended the lawmakers for their legislative acumen, noting that the motion aligns with the M.O.R.E. agenda of the state governor.
