The Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH) in Oghara, Ethiope West Local Government Area has recently earned National and West African accreditation for its Surgery department, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s medical offerings.
This development was announced by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, during a press briefing following a strategic meeting between Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, DELSUTH officials, and the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA). Dr. Onojaeme revealed that the hospital is now working towards securing accreditation for other departments, including Internal Medicine, Radiology, and Community Medicine.
Dr. Onojaeme noted, "The hospital's leadership, along with the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), DELSUTH chapter, met with the governor to express their appreciation for the improvements made so far. Just last month, Governor Oborevwori approved the purchase of a CT scan for the hospital, and additional equipment such as an echocardiography machine and MRI are also in the pipeline."
He added that while past accreditations were largely dependent on state government support, DELSUTH’s internally generated revenue has seen a significant boost, allowing the institution to further enhance its services. "The recent accreditation for the Surgery department is just the beginning, as the hospital is currently working on securing similar recognition for Radiology, Dental, and Internal Medicine departments."
The Acting Chief Medical Director of DELSUTH, Dr. Awunor Nyemike, along with Acting MDCAN Chairman, Prof. Jude Uchendu, and State NMA Chairman, Dr. Israel Adaigho, praised Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to elevating the hospital's standards. They expressed optimism that the Governor’s continued support would position DELSUTH as a leading teaching hospital in the region.
