Chief Frank Ovie Kokori

Dafinone mourns Kokori’s death, extends condolences to family, organize labour

The Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Ede Dafinone, has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family of Chief Frank Ovie Kokori, a renowned labour leader and prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), following his death at the early hours of today.

The Senator described the late Kokori an iconic labour leader, a staunch progressive politician, and a fearless defender of democracy, highlighting the labour leader’s valiant efforts alongside other pro-democracy leaders in establishing the current democratic government in Nigeria.

Chief Kokori, who previously served as the Secretary General of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), had fallen ill a few weeks ago and was subsequently admitted to the hospital. Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated last week, leading to his passing earlier today at the age of 80.

In a heartfelt message conveyed through a signed condolence statement, the Delta Central lawmaker emphasized that Chief Frank Ovie Kokori’s demise is a significant loss not only to the progressive and labour movements, where his contributions remain indelible, but also to the Urhobo nation.

“The news of his death deeply saddens me. Although we grieve, we must accept that we are mere mortals who cannot question God’s will. I firmly believe that Chief Kokori led a fulfilling life and has left behind a remarkable legacy,” Senator Dafinone expressed.

“On behalf of the people of Delta Central, I extend my heartfelt sympathies to the larger Kokori family of Ovu, the APC, and the organized labour community for this great loss.”

“The Urhobo nation, and indeed Delta State, has lost one of its iconic figures. Chief Kokori fearlessly confronted a brutal military junta, placing his personal and family safety at stake, during a time when many remained indifferent.

“Chief Kokori stood up when our nation was at a crossroads. He unwaveringly defended democracy, even in the face of grave danger. He never betrayed the collective aspirations of Nigerians in their quest for democratic governance and remained a progressive until his last breath.”

Recalling his visit to Chief Kokori in the hospital, Senator Dafinone shared, “During our last encounter, he exuded his usual cheerfulness and maintained hope for a greater Nigeria, the nation he lived in and fought for.

“While our revered leader lived a life of great impact and fulfillment, departing at a ripe age, his passing at this critical time in our national history is indeed saddening. We find solace in the knowledge that he ran a good race and finished strong.

“His demise comes at a time when his invaluable guidance is greatly needed to navigate a better path for our democracy and national development; the ideals he cherished and yearned to witness materialize.”

“I pray that God comforts the Kokori family and the Urhobo nation, granting us all the strength to bear this irreparable loss.”
