A 41-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping an 11-year-old girl in Calabar. Justice Blessings Obin Egwu of Family Court II handed down the sentence on Wednesday.

Endurance Ime Sandy was convicted after a trial that spanned several months. The judge ruled that Sandy deserved no mercy based on the evidence presented in court.

According to Justice Egwu, the conviction should serve as a warning to predators who target children. He emphasized that violating minors would not be tolerated under the law.

Barr. James Ibor, principal partner at Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, commended those involved in the investigation.

He praised the 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Calabar for their support throughout the case.

Ibor also thanked the Cross River State Police command and the state's Attorney General, Etubom Ededem Ani. He noted their invaluable contributions to the investigation and the child's welfare.

In his statement, Ibor singled out lawyer Okoi Ukam and Mrs Linda Asuquo for special recognition. Their roles in securing justice for the victim were crucial, he said.

Ibor added that Cross River State remains committed to child protection and safety. He stressed that the government's resolve in this area remains unshakeable.
