Yobe State's government is stepping up efforts to help small traders and business owners through targeted support measures. Officials say interest-free loans could be part of a broader push to boost commerce across the state.

Alhaji Muhammad Alkali runs the Yobe State Small and Medium Scale Industries Credit Board. He made the announcement during talks with traders' leaders in Damaturu this week.

Governor Mai Mala Buni wants closer ties with the business community, Alkali explained. He noted the governor ordered his team to listen to traders and take their concerns seriously.

"The governor wants to hear directly from the business community," Alkali told the traders' association leaders. "He instructed us to meet with them, understand their challenges, and present their concerns to him so that appropriate action can be taken."

Money proved to be the biggest issue traders raised at the meeting. Many complained they lack enough capital to expand or survive Nigeria's tough economic climate.

Participants suggested government-backed loans without interest charges as a solution. According to Alkali, this could help traders grow their businesses and seize new opportunities.

"Many of the traders expressed concerns over inadequate capital and are seeking government support to remain competitive and grow their businesses," he stated. Alkali promised to relay their requests to Governor Buni's office.

He believes the administration will take these concerns seriously. Small businesses drive job creation and wealth in any economy, Alkali stressed.

Young Nigerians should stop waiting for government jobs and start their own ventures instead, he advised. "We encourage our youths to harness their talents, explore business opportunities, and build sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their communities," Alkali said.

Mohammed Muktar Kime leads the Yobe State Harmonized Traders Association. He praised Buni's government for backing commerce and building new markets.

Modern market facilities across Yobe have changed business conditions dramatically, Kime noted. Trading has become easier and more profitable, he added.

"On behalf of traders across Yobe State, we appreciate Governor Mai Mala Buni for prioritizing commerce and trade," Kime said. "The modern markets established by the government have greatly enhanced business activities and created a more conducive environment for traders to thrive."

The meeting underscores Buni's commitment to helping entrepreneurs succeed. It signals the state's determination to become a commercial powerhouse in the region.
