Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu officially took over Nigeria's foreign affairs ministry on Friday. She promised to strengthen the nation's diplomatic reach and rebuild its global standing.
The ceremony took place at the ministry headquarters in Abuja on May 8, 2026. Permanent Secretary Dunoma Umar Ahmed received her alongside senior management and agency heads.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu now leads one of Africa's most extensive diplomatic networks. Nigeria maintains 109 missions abroad—76 embassies, 22 high commissions, and 11 consulates.
Her new role covers bilateral relations, multilateral partnerships, and diaspora affairs. She'll also oversee international cooperation efforts across the continent and beyond.
The reception included representatives from major agencies under the ministry. Present were officials from the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, and the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution.
Also in attendance were the Technical Aid Corps, the Directorate of Technical Cooperation in Africa, and the Foreign Service Academy. Olawale Awe, Nigeria's representative to the Economic Community of West African States, pledged his support.
Ahmed praised Odumegwu-Ojukwu's experience and professional track record. He noted her earlier service as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs prepared her well for this appointment.
The Permanent Secretary expressed confidence in her leadership abilities. He assured her that ministry staff would commit fully to implementing the administration's foreign policy goals.
Ahmed outlined the ministry's core objectives for the coming period. Advancing national interests, protecting Nigerians overseas, attracting investment, and promoting regional peace remain priorities.
