Benue government takes steps to prevent flood disaster

The Benue State Government has issued a red alert to the residents of the state, especially those living by the banks of the Benue River, to relocate to higher grounds as soon as possible.

The state government has taken this step following NEMA’s alert that Cameroon may release more water from the Lagdo Dam, which could lead to severe flooding in Nigeria.

BSEMA has also begun preparations to move people who may be affected by the possible flood that could hit the state. BSEMA’s acting Executive Secretary, James Iorpuu, said the agency is collaborating with the Emergency Flood Committee, which consists of commissioners from related ministries, heads of agencies and departments, and humanitarian partners, to evaluate facilities in some selected locations within Makurdi where the displaced people will be housed.
