Soldiers under Operation Hadin Kai have successfully beaten back a major assault by ISWAP terrorists at Buni Gari in Yobe State's Gujba Local Government Area. At least 50 insurgents were killed in the intense fighting.
The attack targeted the 27 Brigade Headquarters and the Buni Gari checkpoint on multiple fronts. Terrorists launched their assault from several directions in what appeared to be a coordinated bid to capture the base.
Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, spokesman for Operation Hadin Kai, described the military response as devastating. He credited troops with tactical brilliance and unwavering resolve during the battle.
According to Uba, insurgents first struck from the west. They then reinforced their attack through Ganinga Junction from the south and later from the southwest, seemingly intent on surrounding the troops.
"The terrorists were met with devastating resistance that forced them to retreat in confusion while evacuating some of their dead and wounded fighters," the statement read.
Soldiers maintained their position throughout the encounter. They prevented the attackers from breaching the military facility at any point.
Ground operations in the aftermath turned up ten terrorist bodies around the camp perimeter. Intelligence suggested more than 20 additional corpses lay scattered along withdrawal routes near Gashua, Azare and Kamuya.
Air support proved critical to the operation's success. Fighter jets from Operation Hadin Kai's Air Component delivered Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance support to ground forces.
Precision airstrikes targeted fleeing insurgents as they withdrew. These strikes alone killed approximately 20 additional terrorists, military officials confirmed.
Troops recovered substantial quantities of weapons from the battlefield. Eight AK-47 rifles, two General Purpose Machine Guns and two Rocket-Propelled Grenade tubes were among items seized.
Ammunition boxes, loaded magazines and bandoliers were also collected. Three Improvised Explosive Device canisters turned up during the sweep.
Military authorities say follow-up operations continue. Soldiers and volunteer forces are pursuing fleeing insurgents to prevent them from regrouping in the area.
The victory came at a cost to Nigerian forces. Two soldiers died during the encounter while others sustained injuries.
Wounded personnel are currently receiving medical treatment. Military authorities hailed the fallen soldiers as gallant fighters who gave their lives for Nigeria.
Operation Hadin Kai vowed to maintain pressure on terrorist groups. Troops remain battle-ready to continue operations across the North East, officials said.
