Suspected bandits killed six farmers in Kujijiro farmlands on Monday. The attack occurred in Kuyello District, Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Men were gunned down while working their plots. This sparked fresh alarm over deteriorating security conditions in the region.
The Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union condemned the killings in a statement. Its chairman, Dr Isah Muhammad, described the incident as tragic and deeply disturbing.
According to the union, the farmers were "mercilessly attacked and killed" during normal work. They were simply carrying out lawful farming activities when the gunmen struck.
Kuyello and other eastern communities continue facing relentless assaults. Despite peace-building efforts, residents remain trapped in cycles of fear and grief.
The union warned that ongoing attacks threaten the fragile stability residents have struggled to build. Security gaps in any part of Birnin Gwari affect the entire emirate, it noted.
Communities share a common history and destiny. Whether in the east, west, or centre, all deserve equal protection and safety.
"As long as any part of Birnin Gwari remains unsafe, true peace cannot exist," the statement read. The union fears farmers may abandon their fields during the planting season.
Mass exodus from farms would cripple food production across the region. Food prices would skyrocket, worsening economic hardship in Kaduna and northern Nigeria.
BEPU called on federal and state authorities to act decisively. Criminal gangs operating in the area must be dismantled through concrete action.
The union specifically appealed to Defence Minister Shuaibu Bolaji. It also urged the National Security Adviser and armed forces commanders to intensify operations.
Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies must boost patrols in Kuyello. Neighbouring communities also require urgent reinforcement and protection.
Residents deserve the right to live peacefully without fear. They should farm their land and conduct daily business without threat of violence.
Kaduna State Government must strengthen security presence in eastern Birnin Gwari immediately. Authorities must provide resources needed to safeguard lives and property.
The union extended sympathies to families of the deceased farmers. In its statement, BEPU prayed for the repose of their souls.
"Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones in this painful attack," the statement said. The union sought comfort for grieving families during this difficult time.
BEPU appealed to residents to remain calm and united. Community members should cooperate with security agencies and report suspicious activities.
Farmers and other citizens must provide intelligence to help combat insecurity. Law-abiding conduct, the union stressed, remains essential during this crisis.
