Ayo Mairo-Ese, a host on Arise Television's Morning Show, has called on regulatory authorities in the aviation sector to sanction airlines for allegedly treating passengers in an undignified manner.
Mairo-Ese specifically urged the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to take action against erring airlines.
"It cannot be rocket science to make sense of aviation travel in Nigeria," she argued.
Mairo-Ese condemned the hone, noticing that flight tickets are not cheap, however travelers are regularly treated shabbily when they make penances to travel by flight.
In a series of posts on her X handle, Mairo-Ese deplored how travellers are frequently short-changed; indeed, when they book a flight for a specific time, check in at the counter over an hour early, and are still told that the flight left hours earlier without any prior information.
"Why do we do this to ourselves in this country?" Mairo-Ese questioned. "You book a flight for a particular time, you get to the check-in counter over an hour before the time of flight then get told that the flight already left 3hrs prior? No notice. No email. No text. No call."
Mairo-Ese condemned the practice, noting that flight tickets are not cheap, yet passengers are often treated shabbily when they make sacrifices to travel by air. "It cannot be rocket science to make sense of aviation travel in Nigeria," she argued.
The Arise TV host called on the FCCPC and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to "sanitise this industry" and protect the interests and welfare of Nigerians. "Country is hard enough, let some things work!" she exclaimed.
Mairo-Ese's comments come amid growing frustration among passengers over the alleged poor treatment by airlines in Nigeria.
The issue of consumer rights in the aviation sector has been a contentious one, with many calling for stricter regulations and penalties for airlines that fail to meet their obligations to passengers.
