Anambra Police Command has dismissed claims circulating online about a military helicopter dropping items in a bush near Nimo and Adazi-Nnukwu. The force branded the report false and called for calm among residents.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson, issued the statement on Thursday. He said officers rushed to the location after the post went viral on social media.
What officers found on the ground was reassuring. No suspicious objects turned up, and the area remained completely peaceful, Ikenga noted.
Normal life continued in the communities without disruption. Security personnel maintained their regular patrols to protect residents.
CP Ikioye Orutugu, the state police commissioner, urged the public to ignore the alarm. He warned against spreading unverified security stories that spark fear.
Such reports undermine public confidence in the state's security arrangements, Orutugu added. He emphasized the police would keep pursuing intelligence-led operations across the state.
Partnership with other agencies and community leaders remains crucial to peace efforts. The command will continue this collaboration, the commissioner stressed.
Citizens should verify security information through official sources only. Any suspicious activity must be reported directly to police or other security bodies.
Nigeria's social media platforms have become hotbeds of misinformation lately. Security experts worry that false alarms can trigger panic and confusion in communities.
This clarification comes as authorities grapple with rising online rumors. The police are determined to separate fact from fiction for public safety.
