Anambra State has handed out contracts valued above N1 billion for flood management and hospital upgrades. The state also plans to introduce legislation restricting scrap dealer operations.

Law Mefor, the Information Commissioner, made the disclosure on Tuesday in Awka. He spoke right after the State Executive Council convened.

One contract goes to Lebtech Construction Ltd for N801,674,399.75. It covers building a floodwater diversion channel in Oko-Nanka, Orumba North Local Government Area.

Calyzid Ventures secured N279,488,986.35 for medical equipment at General Hospital, Oroma Etiti. According to Mefor, the work involves supplying and installing new apparatus and accessories.

Ozoh United Ventures Nig. Ltd won N92,693,289.65 for external works at Nwafor Orizu College of Education in Nsugbe.

The project includes landscaping and general construction.

Officials view the proposed scrap dealer law as critical protection for public assets. It'll require registration and licensing of all operators in the sector.

Criminal syndicates posing as scrap speculators have been damaging government and private property. Incidents of vandalism and theft have surged across the state recently.

Under the new rules, even vehicle scrap dealers must obtain licenses. Monitoring and surveillance mechanisms will be strengthened through the legislation, Mefor noted.

The Executive Council also imposed a fresh requirement for all bidders. Contractors must now show proof of tax compliance before winning state contracts.

In his words, this policy will boost revenue generation for Anambra. The state expects to benefit from taxes submitted by successful bidders.
