Air Peace has confirmed that its Lagos–London Gatwick flight on May 13 turned back to Lagos due to airspace access problems with an African country's aviation authorities.

The aircraft returned safely following international aviation safety protocols, the airline said in a statement Wednesday. Management explained the decision became necessary while seeking clarification from relevant authorities.

"Air Peace wishes to inform the flying public that its scheduled Lagos–London Gatwick service of May 13, 2026, experienced an operational disruption following enroute access issues involving the airspace authorities of an African country," management said.

According to the carrier, the diversion happened while the aircraft was in flight to Britain. Officials noted that immediate operational clarity with authorities prompted the return to Lagos.

"The aircraft safely returned to Lagos in accordance with established international aviation procedures," the statement noted. This was done pending resolution of the access dispute.

Air Peace rescheduled the affected London Gatwick service as it worked to resolve matters with the authorities. Passengers on the flight received timely updates about the situation.

Affected travellers were provided with assistance and care arrangements during the disruption, the airline confirmed. Support measures were also put in place to reduce passenger inconvenience.

The carrier apologized to all passengers impacted by the incident. Management described the situation as unforeseen and completely outside the airline's control.
