Lagos has become home to a bold new sporting venture designed to bridge Africa and its global diaspora. The Motherland Heritage Cup 2026 launched this week as a continent-wide initiative blending football, music, and cultural celebration.
Oluwatobi Johnson Fakayode heads the project as chief executive officer of Motherland Cup Africa Limited. Backing him is Daniel Amokachi, the legendary Super Eagles striker now serving as global brand ambassador.
Actor Jim Iyke joined as co-founder and chief strategy officer. Entertainment mogul Larry Gaga also lent his support to the venture.
The Nigerian Football Federation and National Sports Commission have thrown their weight behind the tournament. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu accepted the role of Grand Patron.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu count among its prominent backers. Prince Tajudeen Olusi accepted appointment as Life Patron.
Organisers say the cup grew from the success of last year's Motherland Festival & Expo. That gathering had drawn Africans and diaspora members to Lagos for cultural connection.
Four Nigerian cities will host the tournament activities. Lagos takes the lead as the flagship location for all events.
Beyond the pitch, planners see economic potential. The cup aims to create opportunities for small businesses and attract fresh investment into Nigeria.
Tourism and youth engagement will also benefit, organisers believe. They're positioning Nigeria as a premier hub for cultural exchange across the African world.
Speaking at the launch, Fakayode painted an ambitious vision for unity. "We are unlocking Africa's greatest superpower and reuniting this continent with her diaspora through football, culture and entertainment," he noted.
According to him, the cup represents one family separated by history. "We are reunited on one field," Fakayode said.
Nations and communities of Afro-cultural descent will compete. These include participants from Africa, the Caribbean, South America and Latin America.
A charity exhibition match is planned for August 8, 2026. African and Afro-diaspora football legends will take the field for the pre-tournament showcase.
Bank of Industry is partnering on the project. Competition kicks off in November 2026.
