Abia State claimed top honours at the maiden South-East Amateur Boxing Championship on Friday in Umuahia. Host state athletes bagged eight gold medals, three silver and two bronze.
Enugu came second with four gold and four silver medals total. Imo State secured third place after winning one gold, one silver and five bronze medals.
Anambra finished fourth with just one gold and two bronze medals. Ebonyi rounded out the five-state competition with two silver and three bronze medals.
Abia's Sports Commissioner Nwaobilor Ananaba declared the tournament officially closed on Friday afternoon. He praised all participating states for displaying excellent sportsmanship throughout the event.
According to the commissioner, Governor Alex Otti's government backs grassroots sports development strongly. He noted the administration wants to uncover future champions for Abia, the region and Nigeria.
"We didn't just see boxing matches," Ananaba observed. "We witnessed Nigerian boxing's future come alive before our eyes."
Jane Igwe, Permanent Secretary at the Sports Ministry, represented the commissioner at the closing ceremony. She delivered his remarks to the assembled athletes and officials.
Abia's Sports Director Obioma George thanked all five states for their participation. He expressed gratitude to coaches, referees, officials and the organising committee as well.
George commended athletes for their hard work and commitment throughout competition. He wished all delegates safe travels back home.
