Carpenter in court over alleged N850,000 fraud

A 37-year-old carpenter, David Gideon, who allegedly defrauded a friend of N850, 000, was on Thursday arraigned  before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court.

Gideon, who resides at Narayi Low Cost, Kaduna, is being tried for fraud and stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometime in Nov. 2022 at Barnawa Complex Kaduna.

He said the defendant who is a friend of the complainant (James Ladon) collected N850, 000 from him, with a promise to provide furniture in his new house.

“The defendant collected N850, 000 to make kitchen cabinets, doors and other furniture in his three-flat apartment.

The prosecutor added that Gideon collected the money and failed to do the job rather he kept giving excuses to the complainant.

The offences contravened Sections 322 and 217 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017, he added.

The defendant entered a plea of not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, ordered that the sureties must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction.

Emmanuel, also ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.

He adjourned the matter until May 30, for hearing.
