Withheld Salaries: SSANU Awaits Payment, Threatens Strike Action

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has expressed its discontent over the non-payment of withheld salaries to its members, despite President Bola Tinubu’s directive to release the funds.

During an appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today, SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim revealed that the government has only paid the withheld salaries of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) members, leaving out SSANU and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU).

Ibrahim emphasized that the union’s patience is wearing thin, as they signed an agreement that no one should suffer for participating in the strike and that salaries should not be withheld.

The SSANU President also accused the government of treating members of the union with disdain and stated that the non-teaching staff is essential to the functioning of universities, as they own the administrative engine of the institutions.

The issue of withheld salaries has become a pressing concern for SSANU members, who have been waiting for the government to fulfill its promise and release the funds.

With fuel scarcity, food scarcity, and limited access to medical services, the situation has become increasingly difficult for university staff members, prompting them to consider taking action.

As the deadline for the payment of withheld salaries approaches, it remains to be seen if the government will respond to the demands of SSANU and NASU.

Failure to do so may lead to strike action, which could significantly impact the operations of universities across the country.
