A powerful windstorm ravaged Gada Local Government Area in Sokoto State on Sunday night, May 31, 2026. Hundreds of houses collapsed while schools and other buildings suffered severe damage.
Gada town, which serves as the local government headquarters, bore the brunt of the disaster. But surrounding communities also felt the storm's devastating impact.
An anonymous local government official told our reporter that distress calls continue pouring in daily. Community leaders, residents, and ward heads keep reporting fresh cases of destruction.
Over 100 houses in Gada town alone were severely affected by the windstorm. Many buildings lost their roofs entirely while others crumbled partially or completely.
Schools, shops, mosques, churches, and other community facilities didn't escape the destruction. The official said the total number of affected households could reach several hundreds across the area.
Families have been left homeless and exposed to the elements. Hundreds now lack basic shelter as the rainy season progresses.
Residents lost food stocks, household items, and personal belongings in the disaster. Many lost their sources of income as well.
Authorities are still assessing the full extent of damage. Fresh reports continue arriving from different parts of the local government area.
Hon. Bashir Gorau represents Gada-Goronyo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
He confirmed the incident and expressed deep concern about the scale of destruction.
Gorau called on government agencies to act fast. He specifically urged the Sokoto State Government, NEMA, and SEMA to deploy relief materials immediately.
According to him, humanitarian organisations should also join the response efforts. Affected families need urgent support to survive the current situation.
Alhaji Mustapha Umar heads the Relief and Rehabilitation unit at SEMA. He confirmed receiving reports about the windstorm and its devastating effects.
Officials will visit the affected communities soon for detailed assessments, Umar noted. This will help determine the exact scale of reconstruction needed.
Residents have made urgent appeals for government intervention. They want immediate relief supplies and assistance to rebuild their homes and facilities.
