Water Corporation Crisis: Kwara Assembly tasks government on appointment of substantive GM

The Kwara House of Assembly has advised the state government to appoint a substantive General Manager for the state Water Corporation to end the protracted crisis rocking the agency.

This was part of the resolution of the House at plenary on Thursday after receiving the report of the House Committee on Water Resources on a Matter of General Public Importance raised by Mr Abdullahi Danbaba (APC/Kaiama/Kemanji/Wajibe).

The report was on the Need to Avert Industrial Crisis in Kwara State Water Corporation after the workers of the corporation passed a vote of no confidence on the acting general manager, Mr Shehu Umar.

The committee chairman presented the report which was later considered at the Committee of Whole by the House.

Among other resolutions read by the Speaker, Mr Yakubu Salihu, was for the acting GM to improve on his human relations with staff of the corporation.

”The House commends the State Government for the provisions of potable water for the citizens of the state, payment of salary, provision of running cost for the corporation and ongoing rehabilitation of some water works in the state.

”We however urge the government to provide operational vehicles for the Corporation and review upward the monthly allocation to enable it cater adequately for the provision of stationery materials and other working tools for the staff.

”Also, we urge the government to provide adequate security for waterworks by engaging the service of NSCDC and provision of relevant security kits in order to protect government property,” the speaker said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the aggrieved workers, under the aegis of Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), had on April 27, passed a vote of no confidence on the acting general manager.

Some of the allegations leveled against him included intimidation, bad administration, sabotaging government’s effort in the on-going rehabilitation of water facilities, poor staff welfare and poor working environment.
