Professor Ado Garba Jangargari of Federal University Dutse has won a N25 million research grant. The award came through TETFund's National Research Fund scheme.
His proposal focuses on technology and pastoral livelihoods in Northern Nigeria. It's titled "Tech for Peace: Engaging Northern Nigeria's Pastoralists in Non-Agricultural Livelihoods to Counter Banditry and Kidnapping."
Jangargari works in the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development at FUD in Jigawa State. He'll use the funds to develop tech-driven solutions for herders.
The research aims to create alternative income sources for pastoral communities. This, he believes, will reduce banditry and kidnapping in the region.
Security challenges have ravaged Northern Nigeria for years. Officials say the insecurity has affected economic activity and displaced thousands.
University staff hailed the achievement as a win for FUD. They noted it shows the institution's role in solving Nigeria's development problems.
TETFund's National Research Fund backs projects addressing critical national issues. High-quality research proposals compete for support under the programme.
Implementation of Jangargari's project will begin soon. He'll lead a team to test the technology solutions across pastoral zones.
