Urgent Intervention Needed: Cooking Gas Price Hike in Nigeria

In the face of rising cooking gas prices in Nigeria, an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Osun State, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the matter.

The increasing cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of gas has become unbearable for the masses, with prices now ranging between N17,500 and N18,000 in many parts of the country.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, had previously announced that the Federal Government had asked producers of petroleum gas to stop exporting the commodity, but this decision has yet to yield positive results in terms of reducing the price.

In a statement to reporters on Sunday in Osogbo, the State capital, Oyintiloye expressed his confidence in President Tinubu’s ability to address the issue, saying, “I know that Mr. President has a listening ear, and he will do something urgent about this matter.”

He also emphasized the need for all relevant and critical stakeholders to work together to tackle the challenges in the oil and gas industry.

The APC chieftain also highlighted the detrimental effects of using solid fuels like charcoal and firewood on the environment, which can lead to deforestation, desertification, and soil degradation.

He warned that this could result in respiratory problems, headaches, confusion, and dizziness, as well as a decrease in overall well-being due to inadequate oxygen delivery to the brain.

As Nigerians grapple with the challenges of fuel subsidy removal and unstable electricity supply, the need for a solution to the cooking gas price hike is more pressing than ever.

The government must take swift action to address this issue, ensuring that affordable and clean cooking gas is available to all citizens.
