Washington has sanctioned thirteen individuals and entities accused of procuring weapons for Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Man-portable air-defense systems, or MANPADS, were among the military hardware sought by these Iran-linked operatives. They are based across Iran, Belarus, China, and Hong Kong.
The action came on May 8, 2026. US officials said it targets networks helping Tehran acquire weapons and expand regional military capabilities.
America framed the sanctions as supporting United Nations enforcement measures against Iran. Tehran's "significant non-performance" on nuclear commitments prompted the UN to reimpose its sanctions regime.
UN Security Council resolution 1929 bars member states from selling conventional weapons to Iran. MANPADS fall squarely under that prohibition.
The State Department reiterated its commitment to maximum pressure on Tehran. Officials want to cut off IRGC access to funding that fuels what they describe as subversive regional activities.
