Kwara State has raised fresh alarm over the growing number of unknown commercial motorcycle operators flooding the state at an alarming rate.
Officials worry this influx could deepen security threats facing several communities already under strain. The state's Transportation Commissioner, Aliyu Korasabi, sounded the warning during an urgent security meeting in Ilorin yesterday.
Korasabi told transport union chiefs to back the ongoing registration drive for residents. He noted that many communities are currently battling serious security challenges alongside this trend.
"We're seeing more unidentified motorcycle operators entering Kwara every day," Korasabi said at the gathering. "All stakeholders must act fast to address this crisis."
Registering commercial bike and tricycle operators will help security forces spot legitimate workers, he explained. Criminal elements hiding within the transport sector will become easier to detect and isolate.
According to him, "The registration exercise will generate reliable information for security agencies to identify real operators and weed out criminals pretending to be transport workers."
Korasabi stressed that police and military cannot shoulder security alone in the state. "Everyone must treat security as our shared duty," he told the stakeholders present.
He praised transport unions for working with the government on security matters. Union leaders should intensify their commitment to these protective initiatives across Kwara, he urged.
