United Bank for Africa has opened a new innovation hub and business office at the University of Lagos.
The commissioning took place on campus with Tony Elumelu, UBA's group chairman, in attendance. Oliver Alawuba, the group managing director and chief executive, led the ceremony alongside senior bank officials.
Vice-Chancellor Folasade Ogunsola represented the university at the event. She praised Elumelu as a true son of the institution.
Elumelu is an alumnus of UNILAG. He called the commissioning both symbolic and strategic for the bank's growth agenda across Africa.
"Returning to my alma mater makes this moment particularly meaningful," he said. Universities, he noted, remain where ideas and future leaders emerge.
According to him, UBA's investment reaffirms the bank's faith in young people and their potential. "We believe institutions like the University of Lagos will shape Africa's future," Elumelu added.
The four-story complex will house UBA's dedicated business office on one floor. Three remaining floors will serve the university's broader institutional needs.
Students and faculty will access banking services directly from the facility. They'll also receive financial advisory support and enterprise guidance.
Ogunsola highlighted Elumelu's transformation of a struggling bank into a pan-African powerhouse. "That fire was sharpened here at this university," she told guests.
She commended UBA for maintaining a partnership rooted in impact and innovation. Her remarks emphasized the deep ties between the bank and Nigeria's education sector.
UBA made banking history in Nigeria. It became the first bank to establish a campus branch in the 1960s.
That pioneering move revolutionized financial inclusion in higher education institutions. It set a standard for banking support within Nigeria's universities.
Oliver Alawuba stressed the facility's importance during his speech. He described it as intentional investment in talent and economic transformation.
"UBA creates platforms connecting knowledge with opportunity," Alawuba told the gathering. Access to ideas, networks, and financial services will prepare future leaders, he explained.
The innovation hub operates as a shared space for academia and industry collaboration. Both sectors can leverage resources and expertise within the facility.
Students gain direct exposure to banking operations and financial services. Faculty members can explore research partnerships and advisory opportunities.

UNILAG also announced the renewal of UBA's sponsorship during the ceremony. Details of the sponsorship arrangement weren't immediately disclosed.
