Twelve secondary schools have made it to the semi-finals of the 2026 Tax Club Quiz Competition. The Kwara State Internal Revenue Service announced the results Friday after preliminary rounds concluded.
A total of 90 schools registered for this year's contest. Eighty-seven schools actually participated in the online preliminary stage.
The preliminary rounds ran from Tuesday, June 23 to Friday, June 26, 2026. Before the competition began, the KW-IRS Tax Club Advocacy Committee held a virtual mock test for all participating schools.
The mock test prepared schools for the Computer-Based Test format used since 2024. The online system was designed to help students become comfortable with the testing platform.
In the first round, 36 schools advanced to the second stage. From that group, only 12 emerged as semi-finalists.
Each of Kwara's three senatorial districts sent four schools to the semi-finals. This ensured balanced representation across the state.
Kwara Central qualified: Government Day Secondary School, Oja Gboro; Saint Anthony's Senior Secondary School; Ebenezer High School; and Ar-Raheem International College. Kwara South's representatives are Ansar-U-Deen College, Offa; Oro Grammar School, Oro; Oyun Baptist High School, Ijagbo; and Hubbullah Islamic Model School, Omu-Aran.
Kwara North sent four schools as well. They are: Government Secondary School, Lafiagi; Baptist Model High School, Kaiama; Government Secondary School, Ilesha-Baruba; and Lafiagi Senior Secondary School.
Funmilola Oguntunbi, Convener of the KW-IRS Tax Club Advocacy Committee, praised how smoothly the preliminary rounds went. She spoke on behalf of the Executive Chairman of KW-IRS.
According to Oguntunbi, the Service upgraded its online Tax Club platform for the competition. The improvements aimed to make administration easier and give schools a better experience.
She explained that technology helps the Service promote transparency and efficiency. She also noted it encourages wider participation in the annual event.
Officials from the Education Ministry monitored the preliminary rounds closely. Roseline Ayansola and Imam Toyin Olanrewaju, representing the Commissioner for Education, praised all participating schools.
They commended the enthusiasm and discipline shown by students throughout the competition. School principals, teachers, and Local Government coordinators also earned recognition for their support.
Virtual semi-finals will take place in October 2026. Six top-performing schools will advance to the grand finale in November.
Winners at the grand finale will compete for a prize of N2.5 million. The competition reflects growing efforts to teach tax awareness among young Nigerians.
