A devastating accident occurred on the Aba – Ikot Ekpene highway in Abia State, resulting in the death of four passengers.
The collision involved a Toyota Sienna bus, traveling at high speed, and a tricycle carrying four passengers including the driver.
The incident took place at approximately 5:30 PM, with eyewitnesses attributing the crash to the bus driver’s excessive speed and failure to consider the road conditions.
The Aba – Ikot Ekpene highway is currently undergoing rehabilitation, with some sections still incomplete, contributing to the hazardous nature of the road.
The accident has led to renewed calls for the construction company responsible for the road works to expedite the completion of the rehabilitation, particularly in the areas that pose significant risks to motorists.
Sympathizers at the scene made efforts to remove the bodies of the deceased, while soldiers intervened to prevent individuals from taking photographs.
This tragic event has once again highlighted the importance of road safety and the need for drivers to exercise caution, especially on roads under construction.
The Agalaba Patriotic Forum, a local youth group, had recently urged the construction company to address safety concerns on the road, emphasizing the potential risks posed by incomplete sections.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of neglecting road safety measures and the urgent need for improvements to prevent further loss of life.
